Grounded is a word that is often used in yoga classes but what does it actually mean? It’s perhaps easier to understand what it means to be grounded by first understanding what it means to be ungrounded. When we’re wound up, anxious or stressed, we fall into the trap of believing that we are our emotions. We get caught up in negative events that happened in the past or in our own negative projections of the future.
Being grounded means to be in a place of calm, feeling a sense of safety and security despite the chaos or challenges around you. In yoga, we hope to yoke the sense of physical grounding, psychological and emotional grounding by combining breath, movement and meditation.
Grounded doesn’t mean staying in one place, staying still, though stillness is definitely welcome from time to time. We can move more freely from the grounding and rooting coming from inside us. And from there, we can grow, blossom and shine.
To stay present in everyday life, it helps to be deeply rooted within yourself; otherwise the mind, which has incredible momentum will drag you along like a wild river. Keep grounding, keep growing!
