How Yoga Helped Me Navigate a Crisis

Life can take unexpected turns, and last Thursday, mine took a sharp one. My husband, alone at home, suffered a seizure. Initially diagnosed as a heart attack and later as a blood clot, it was ultimately revealed as a fractured thoracic spine (T3 and T6).

Why This Resting Pose Might Be Your Yoga Game Changer

Okay so I have a confession…

In my early years of practising yoga, I attended yoga classes at a fitness club. You know, the type of club that has a full timetable of exercise classes, a swimming pool and an array of body-building equipment.

Exploring ‘Slow Flow’ and ‘Dynamic Flow’ Yoga Sessions

Curious about what my yoga classes in Rugby are like? I offer a unique blend of ancient wisdom and modern teachings, with thoughtful quotes and Sanskrit language woven throughout our sessions.

Understanding ‘Slow Flow’ and ‘Dynamic Flow’

‘Slow Flow’ is a beginner-friendly vinyasa class held in a calm, gentle space—perfect for those new to yoga or anyone seeking a slower, mindful practice. We focus on alignment, slow movements, and deep stretches to help release built-up tension and soothe tired muscles.
When and Where? Houlton School, Tuesdays, 7.15pm-8.15pm

‘Dynamic Flow’ is an invigorating challenge for those with some yoga experience. It encourages exploration, building strength, flexibility, and balance. This class introduces a wider range of poses, encouraging you to move beyond your comfort zone and embrace more complex transitions.
When and Where? Houlton School, Tuesdays 6pm-7pm and Eastlands, Fridays 9.15am-10.15am

What Postures Can You Expect in Class?

‘Slow Flow’ establishes the foundational journey, focusing on essential poses like Downward Dog for strength and flexibility. Warrior poses I, II, and III enhance strength, balance, and flexibility, while poses like ‘Tree’ and ‘Stork’ promote stability and balance. The class integrates gentle backbends, twists, and folds, aiming to ease spinal tension and promote a relaxed state.

‘Dynamic Flow’ introduces a broader spectrum of poses, including balancing postures, backbends, deep twists, and more challenging movements like arm balances and binds. This class emphasises more complex transitions between poses, adding an invigorating element to your practice. And remember, ‘dynamic’ doesn’t mean faster; it’s about embracing the challenge within poses and transitions.

Am I ready to come to a yoga class? What if I can’t do all the poses? Your top yoga questions answered

Am I Ready for a Yoga Class?

Starting yoga can be a daunting experience. Many people have preconceived notions about what yoga entails, believing they need to be flexible, strong, or knowledgeable about poses before they begin. You don’t need any of those things. My classes are open to everyone, and you can come as you are. There’s no need to compare yourself to others; focus on your practice and what you can achieve in the present moment.

What Should I Wear?

Opt for comfortable, stretchy clothing that’s not too loose. Layers are a good idea, and remember that yoga is practised with bare feet. You can start with socks if it’s cold but should remove them when the session begins. Special grip yoga socks are an option if you prefer not to go barefoot.

Is Yoga Only for Women?

Not at all! My yoga classes are open to all, regardless of gender identity. I strive to create an inclusive and welcoming space that values and respects individuals, embracing their unique experiences. Yoga is a practice for everyone, and I’m committed to making it accessible to all.

What if I can’t Do All the Poses? No Worries!

Yoga is non-competitive, and it’s entirely normal not to do every pose in a class. I provide plenty of options, and you can rest at any point. Your comfort and well-being are my top priorities. Join me on the mat, exactly as you are, and embrace the transformative power of yoga in an inclusive and welcoming environment!

I’m New to Yoga, Which Class Should I Choose?

For beginners, I recommend starting with my ‘Flow & Chill’ class. This session is specifically designed for newcomers and takes place on Tuesdays at Houlton School from 7:15 pm to 8:15 pm. ‘Flow & Chill’ offers a balanced blend of flowing movements and relaxation techniques, allowing you to ease into the practice while finding moments of calm and tranquility.

What Style of Yoga Will I Be Learning?

In my classes, we practise Vinyasa Flow, a dynamic style of yoga where poses are thoughtfully strung together to form a fluid sequence of movement. I bring a contemporary and modern-day vibe to my classes, combining the essence of ancient yogic wisdom with present-day relevance. You’ll hear some of the postures in the ancient yogic language of Sanskrit, and we incorporate thoughtfully chosen quotations to enrich your practice.

What Do I Need to Bring?

For all classes, bring your yoga mat and a water bottle. Depending on the class, consider two yoga bricks and a block, a blanket, an eye pillow, or a bolster for added comfort and support.

Explore Doshas for Yoga and Everyday Life

One of the things that I love about yoga is that it has so many layers to it. It isn’t just a physical practice – it’s so much more!

Over the past few weeks in our yoga classes in Rugby, we’ve explored the fascinating world of Ayurveda, an ancient Indian wisdom tradition. Ayurveda identifies three core energetic forces within us called Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These Doshas influence not just our physical health, but also our mental and emotional well-being. Understanding your dominant Dosha can be a powerful tool for navigating life – both on and off the yoga mat.

Why Yoga Might Be the Anything-But-Boring Adventure You Need

Social media might paint yoga as holding serene poses for ages, hushed whispers of “namaste,” and a peaceful vibe. But yoga is so much more! It offers tranquility, yes, but it’s also surprisingly dynamic and adventurous. Think of it as exploring a whole mountain range, not just the foothills. Ready to ditch the preconceptions and discover the yoga adventure you never knew existed?

Shatter the Stereotypes:

First things first, let’s break free from the image of pretzel-shaped yogis chanting in unison. Yoga boasts a diverse spectrum of styles, from the high-energy flow of Vinyasa, to the deep stretches of Yin. There’s also inversions and power yoga that’ll leave you feeling like you just conquered your own personal Mount Everest (in downward-facing dog pose, naturally). We are so fortunate to have so many incredible yoga teachers in Rugby and I encourage you to explore different styles, and discover what lights you up.

Embrace the Challenge:

Think yoga is all gentle stretches and holding poses? Think again! Vinyasa, with its uplifting spirit and touch of inspiration, pushes your physical limits as each posture seamlessly blends into the next, building strength, stamina, and flexibility you never knew you possessed. Get ready to build heat, and maybe even wobble a bit (it’s all part of the process!). You’ll emerge feeling empowered and accomplished.

Beyond the Body:

Yoga isn’t just about fancy contortions. It’s a journey inward, a chance to connect with your breath, quieten your mind, and explore the depths of your being. Through this harmonious vinyasa flow, you’ll find yourself de-stressing, boosting your mood, and cultivating a sense of inner peace.

Adventure Awaits:

Think of yoga as a gateway to new experiences. Once you tap into its potential, you unlock a world of possibilities. From outdoor yoga amidst breathtaking landscapes to partner yoga fostering connection and trust, or even candlelit yoga for a serene evening practice, yoga becomes an exciting exploration of movement and self-discovery.

You might just find yourself surprised, challenged, and exhilarated by the adventure that awaits. Remember, the only “boring” yoga is the one you haven’t explored yet.

Think Yoga is Just About Flexibility?

Many yoga newcomers dream of achieving incredible flexibility, and that’s a wonderful aspiration. However, building strength is equally crucial for a safe and sustainable yoga practice.

Think about it: our modern lives, often characterised by long periods of sitting, often leave us with tight and weak hamstrings. We might believe we’re active because we exercise daily, but what about the remaining 23 hours?

Simply stretching tight, weak muscles can feel like the answer, but it can actually increase the risk of injury. Without the necessary strength to support our newfound flexibility, our connective tissues might struggle with the demands placed upon them.

Therefore, before diving into deep stretches, let’s address the root cause. By strengthening our muscles, we build a robust foundation that supports and enhances our flexibility.

Finding the balance between strength and flexibility is the cornerstone of a safe and effective yoga practice. All yoga classes are currently full. Join my priority list for updates on yoga classes and events in Rugby, Warwickshire.
