In Feel Good Friday Yoga in Rugby today, we started to explore the element, Water. Up to 60% of our bodies are made of water. It is incredibly easy to lose our sense of fluidity and buoyancy in a world that can feel heavy, tense, rigid, weighed down.
The water element helps us to find our sense of flow again. If you look at ancient cultures, the Greeks, Romans, the Chinese, Tibetans and Vietnamese, the Celts, you will see that the elements of earth, fire, water and air played a central role in their lives and in different ways.
The 5 elements are represented in yoga through the Chakra system. Yoga philosophy places the water element in the pelvic bowl, hips, low back, and belly, otherwise known as ‘Svadhisthana or Sacral chakra. Water is wonderful to explore physically and mentally.
In this series, use the ujjaji (oceanic) breath as we move through divers, boat, frog, heron, fish, and mermaid postures and embrace the water element to find fluidity in our bodies and our minds.
